What is PCOS?

The polycystic ovarian syndrome refers to the condition in which the ovaries generate a large number of tiny cysts (fluid-filled sacs). Moreover, the male sex chemicals androgens, which are generally present in women in small amounts, are produced in excessively high levels by the ovaries due to PCOS disease.

PCOS Symptoms

PCOS side effects or symptoms include the following-

  • Irregular periods

  • IMissed Periods or very light flow

  • Acne or oily skin

  • Thinning of scalp hair

  • Infertility

Diagnosis for PCOS problems

PCOS is usually diagnosed after doing a couple of tests that will be discussed shortly. However, much before these tests are done, doctors will ask you about the symptoms and medical history. This is done in order to understand the problem better and rule out alternative reasons for the symptoms.

The tests performed for the diagnosis of PCOS problems are-

  • Pelvic Examination: It consists of examining the reproductive organs physically to look for growths, anomalies, or lumps.

  • Blood Tests: Blood tests, such as fasting lipid profiles, and glucose tolerance tests, will help to understand hormone levels.

  • Imaging Test: The size of the ovaries, the presence of follicles, the uterus lining, and any ovarian cysts are all measured using ultrasound during an imaging exam. The transducer produces images of your ovaries and other pelvic organs using sound waves.

Please note that there is no single test that can alone help in the diagnosis of PCOS.

Treatment for PCOS Problems

PCOS symptoms and issues can be reduced considerably by managing the androgen hormone levels in one’s body. Here are certain steps you can take to maintain your androgen levels-

  • A nourishing diet can help regulate your hormones and your menstrual cycle.

  • Reducing caffeine intake can affect the estrogen levels in the body.

  • You can take supplements after consulting a doctor.

  • Maintaining body weight by exercising or yoga might help.

  • Taking steps to reduce stress will be beneficial as stress is one of the major reasons behind abnormal hormone levels.

  • Stay in constant touch with your doctor.
